Fort Walker is a historic fortification located in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It was originally built in 1861 during the Civil War as a Confederate fort to protect the entrance to Port Royal Sound. The fort was named after Brigadier General R. W. Walker, who was killed at the Battle of Port Royal.
In 1862, Union forces captured Port Royal Sound and the fort became part of the Union's defensive system. The fort was enlarged and reinforced with additional artillery and infantry during the war.
Today, Fort Walker is a popular tourist attraction and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can explore the remains of the fort, including the earthworks and gun emplacements. The fort is located within the Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort, which offers amenities such as beach access, pools, and restaurants.
